Abstract

The purpose of the current study was to determine prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal predictors leading to poor performance on the national Common Entrance Examination (CEE) in Barbados. This examination, also known as the ‘Eleven-Plus Exam-ination’, is routinely administered to all 11-year-old children in Barbados and in other British Com-mon wealth nations (Durbrow, Schaefer, & Jimerson,2002; Enger, 1991; MacKenzie, 1989). The CEE is a modification of the Eleven-Plus Examination which was originally developed in the UK and used there for many years. It is currently used by the Barbados Ministry of Education to monitor educational pro-gress and to rank children for assignment to local secondary schools. Higher-ranking children are likely to be assigned to academic-oriented schools and lower-ranking children are in many cases as-signed to trade schools. Therefore, performance on the CEE is very relevant as it may have long-term implications on the future careers and life-long opportunities available to children in this island setting.
