Access, Equity, and Performance
Abstract
Many Caribbean nations are embracing knowledge-based and skill-intensive industries as a way to expand their economies in the 21st century. The aim is to boost the competitiveness and productivity of the region’s most precious resource – its people – through investments that lead to a better-educated workforce with more employable skills.
Access, Equity and Performance focuses on policy and public financing strategies that must strike a balance between the need to improve education and the scarce resources available to do it. It examines the very different institutional responses to education issues in Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. The different education systems and levels of development in these four nations allow for identifying a number of useful lesson about how to deliver education services equitably and effectively in an increasingly integrated and global context.
