A FUNCTIONAL ROLE FOR TEACHERS’ ORGANIZATIONS IN BARBADOS

Leonard Shorey

Abstract

In considering the role of teachers’ professional organizations it is essential that, at the outset, we recognise the tremendous importance of the part played by the teacher in the education of the child and youth. For the purpose of education today is not simply to supply the child with a few facts; the expectations are far greater. More and more we look on education as one of the means, and possibly the most important one, whereby we can change the society in which we live. With this new objective “the role of the teacher becomes that of stimulating the learner’s curiosity, sharpening his powers of independent intellectual discovery and strengthening his ability to organize and use knowledge on his own initiative – in short, helping the learner to acquire life-long powers of self-education.”
