Mental Ability In Jamaica

Abstract

In every underdeveloped country of the world, education, of necessity, plays a special role in the life of the people, for in a large measure it is true to say that nations remain backward because of the ignorance of their people. Without education, considered in the broadest sense, backward peoples cannot acquire the skills and disciplines which will enable them to make their way in the modern world. Moreover, most underdeveloped countries are under going rapid social change, and their educational systems exert a powerful influence upon the nature and direction of that change. Finally, the individual frequently sees education as a major, if not the main avenue of social mobility, and in the West Indies, in particular, with its highly stratified and relatively rigid class system, education provides one of the few important channels through which the lower social groups can climb into the relatively privileged ranks of the middle classes.
